“In the early 1880s, Hawley & Hoops developed the ‘A No. 1 Brand’ and became one of the first brands of any kind to create a kind of pop culture licensing campaign though their collaborations with illustrator Palmer Cox.” This 1884 advertising trade sign was the first to to feature Cox’s popular Brownies cartoon characters.
Normal wear associated with an old advertising sign may include creases, a corner bump, edge/corner wear, staining on front/back etc. The sign looks to be cut down or cropped to fit into a scrapbook.
